'' Mystical Nativity''
A collection of paintings, exhibited at the prestigious Palais de l’Athénée in Geneva, Switzerland, represents a profound meditation on Ancient Greek civilization filtered through the aesthetic language of medieval illumination and Byzantine art. The series demonstrates Zannetos unique ability to bridge multiple historical periods, using the decorative richness of medieval visual traditions to explore the philosophical, mythological, and cultural heritage of classical Greece. “The Mystical Nativity” merges Christian iconography with scientific cosmology through its central atomic model, suggesting the synthesis of faith and reason that characterized later Greek thought. “Uranian and Pandemous Eros” directly engages with Platonic philosophy, visualizing the dual nature of love through elaborate symbolic imagery and richly patterned surfaces. “Ionian Poet,” inspired by Cavafy’s meditation on cultural persecution, addresses the survival of Hellenic culture and its gods despite iconoclasm—the poet as guardian of treasures meant to be destroyed, preserving what Cavafy defends: that the gods did not die when their statues were broken and temples closed. “Unicorn” offers a celestial vision of mythological purity, while the circular format and starlit composition evoke both ancient cosmological thought and the timeless quality of myth itself. Together, these works create a visual dialogue between the classical Greek world and the medieval artistic traditions that preserved and transformed Greek knowledge through centuries.
